In a move signaling renewed confidence in supply chain aggregation, two NYK Group companies –NYK Logistics (Americas) Inc. (NLA) and Yusen Air & Sea Service (U.S.A.) Inc. (YAS) – are merging.
Effective today, the new company will be doing business as Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc.
In the Americas, NLA & YAS have worked in tandem for over 25 years. The combined company will offer full end-to-end service coverage including origin cargo management, ocean freight forwarding through its Double Wing Express brand, airfreight forwarding, warehousing, reverse logistics, surface transportation and integrated supply chain offerings.
Industry experts told SCMR that this will place Yusen Logistics in the top tier of global players.
“It certainly makes a bold statement,” said Rosalyn Wilson, Senior Business Analyst of Delcan’s Infrastructure Business, National Operations, in Washington, DC. “And the announcement comes at a time when many other ocean carriers are outsourcing their logistics services.”
According to company spokesmen, the respective strengths of the two organizations in the Americas dovetail to create a company that will offer comprehensive supply chain services. From production at origin to final destination every link of the supply chain can be delivered under the guidance and control of a Yusen branded and operated service.
Globally, Yusen Logistics will employ over 17,000 staff across 412 offices and facilities and manage over 22 million square feet of warehousing space. In the Americas, Yusen Logistics will have over 60 office locations throughout North and South America. They will employ some 2,000 staff and operate 4.7 million square feet of warehousing space. The new company will be headed up by Masaki Tanaka, Chairman, Kazuo Ishizuka, President and CEO and Michael Noone as EVP & COO.
In an interview with SCMR, Noone said that in addition to a complete portfolio of logistics and transportation services, Yusen brings broader expertise to the table.
“This means that the value that we are now able to create for our customers as Yusen Logistics increases exponentially given the added services we offer as an integrated company,” he said.
